OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IS A FAILURE My KPFT Studio Engineer was sent Cologuard unsolicited, A scam

February 25, 2024 By Egberto Willies

My studio engineer got an unsolicited shipment, Cologuard. Of course, because he is on Medicare, it is likely a scam to increase sales, not what is best for our healthcare.

OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IS A FAILURE.

Watch Politics Done Right T.V. here.

Podcasts (Video — Audio)

The host of Politics Done Right pointed out an incident involving his studio engineer, Jack, at KPFT. Despite being on Medicare, Jack received an unsolicited delivery of Cologuard, a colonoscopy product. This event underscores a pervasive and troubling trend in the U.S. healthcare system, marked by predatory marketing practices and an over-reliance on expensive, often unnecessary medical interventions.

The case of Jack and the unsolicited Cologuard kit is emblematic of a larger systemic issue. Leveraging aggressive marketing strategies, pharmaceutical companies often target vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, or those on government-funded healthcare plans like Medicare. The underlying motive is profit maximization at the expense of patient well-being. These companies exploit government-funded healthcare systems, passing the cost of their products onto taxpayers while patients receive unsolicited and potentially unnecessary medical products.

This incident also highlights a critical flaw in the U.S. healthcare system’s approach to preventive medicine. While preventive measures like colonoscopies are essential, the commodification of these procedures through products like Cologuard raises questions about the ethics and efficacy of such approaches. The healthcare system, driven by profit, often fails to provide clear information to patients about the financial implications of these tests, especially if they lead to further, more invasive procedures not covered by insurance.

Moreover, the narrative extends to the broader issue of drug pricing and accessibility. The host mentions Xolair, a drug for asthma now being repurposed for peanut allergies, with a staggering price tag of $5,000 per month. This case is not isolated; it reflects a systemic issue where pharmaceutical companies set exorbitant prices for essential medications, making them inaccessible to many. The financial burden of managing a single chronic condition can devastate a family’s finances, exemplifying the profound inequities in the healthcare system.

The personal experience of the host’s wife with Lupus and her involvement in a trial program for Benlista further illustrate these disparities. Despite participating in the trial, there was no continued access to the drug post-trial, a common occurrence in the pharmaceutical industry. The industry often benefits from patient participation in trials but fails to provide long-term support or affordable access to these drugs post-trial.

This narrative is a scathing indictment of the U.S. healthcare system, exposing its failures in providing equitable, affordable, and ethical healthcare. It underscores the need for a radical overhaul of the system, moving towards a model prioritizing patient welfare over profit. The host advocates for a single-payer system akin to those in Canada or the UK, where healthcare is a right, not a privilege. In such a system, the government plays a central role in ensuring that healthcare is accessible and affordable for all, reducing the influence of private corporations in determining healthcare policies and prices.

The incident with the unsolicited Cologuard kit is not just a singular event of corporate overreach but a symptom of a deeply flawed healthcare system. It underscores the urgent need for comprehensive healthcare reform in the United States. A move towards a single-payer system, as advocated by many progressives, could be a significant step in ensuring that healthcare serves the people’s needs, not corporations’ profit margins. As the host poignantly states, it’s time for the populace to awaken to these realities and demand a healthcare system that truly cares for its citizens.
