Jake Tapper recently interviewed North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. The governor was questioned about Donald Trump’s claim that Joe Biden is buying votes through welfare benefits. Burgum agreed with Trump’s statement, stating that Biden’s policies, such as student loan forgiveness, are bribes to gain votes. He argued that these policies are unfair to those who have worked hard and paid off their debts, creating an uneven playing field. Tapper then asked Burgum if he found Trump’s promise to cut taxes for the wealthy to be buying votes, to which Burgum defended the wealthy donors as job creators who took risks and contributed to the American dream.

Burgum’s reply is a fallacy. The American people, not wealthy individuals or corporations, are the job creators. The role of everyday citizens creates demand, leading to the need for supply and job opportunities. This is the reality, and it challenges the notion that corporate executives or wealthy donors are solely responsible for driving economic growth. Instead, it recognizes the collective efforts of the American people in building a thriving society.

Furthermore, the progressive policies that Biden instantiated with the determined push by the progressive flank, such as student loan forgiveness to rectify the inherent inequalities in the education system, are necessary to achieve some level of equity. The exploitative nature of corporations profiting from student loans while simultaneously benefiting from educated employees illustrates the parasitic nature rampant within our economic system. A fairer society that prioritizes education and provides opportunities for all individuals to succeed benefits everyone.

While providing student loan forgiveness has benefits, continuous tax cuts for the wealthy are, in fact, a form of legalized theft, vote-buying, and an eye-wink to get campaign funding from rich people. Such tax cuts primarily benefit the already affluent, exacerbating income inequality and widening the wealth gap. We must advocate for fair taxation, ensuring the wealthy contribute their fair share to society.

The interview with Governor Doug Burgum sheds light on the contrasting perspectives between progressive ideals and conservative viewpoints. The progressive viewpoint emphasizes the importance of the American people as the true job creators and supports policies that address systemic inequalities. It challenges the notion of corporate executives as the sole drivers of economic growth and advocates for fair taxation and educational opportunities for all. Americans must choose if they want to vote for policies that elevate us all or one that creates wealth that built said wealth with the masses’ work, worth, and intellect.
