I subscribe to a lot of newsletters. I don’t always get around to reading them daily, just like I am sure many cannot read every one of my “Egberto Off The Record” newsletters. After all, I send out 1 to 5 every day, depending on the day’s news.
I served on the Coffee Party USA board for several years. This transpartisan organization tried to unite people regardless of ideology in these polarized times. Subsequently, a more traditional status quo organization absorbed the group’s resources as most former members moved on to keep the organization’s spirit alive.
Former Coffee Party USA President and Board of Director Debilyn Molineax recently founded the American Future organization, which encompasses several projects. One of her projects involves “The Daily Future Journal,” also distributed as a newsletter. I found the latest one compelling. She titled it “Original Sin? Or Original Choice?”
I love this article not solely for what it said but for what it left up to the reader to discern. And fairminded people should explore today’s realities, our past acts, and the future we are empowered to build.
Most of us are familiar with the concept of “original sin” as told in the Bible (or the Torah) of the eviction of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. The story highlights how temptation (or was it curiosity?) got the better of Eve and she ate the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. This decision led to big changes as Adam and Eve were expelled from their comfortable living conditions.
Growing up, this was a cautionary story in Sunday School about making good choices. It may be developmentally appropriate for children, who need to be obedient to stay safe. Adults should question the usefulness of this story in democracy. Citizens involved in self-rule must question, engage, and hold accountable those given authority, and do so following the rule of law.
