It won’t be easy, but we can prevent the worst from happening. We can make a difference. We are already seeing the cracks. But we must continue to apply pressure exponentially.
Here’s how we are making a difference.
If one listens to Donald Trump, his sycophants, and Fox News, the impression is that he won in a landslide and that it is full steam ahead. Both the Republican House and the Republican Senate have been scared to challenge the President and his administration for fear of a “popular president” primarying them. However, while the President can maintain a poker face regarding his popularity and strengths, the polls will eventually catch up to the sentiment of all Americans. And guess what? The slide has begun.
Donald Trump is willing to disrupt the American and world economies to achieve his goal of massive tax cuts for his wealthy benefactors. For now, he controls both the Senate and the House numerically and functionally. Recently, Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed the silent part out loud. She inferred that Republicans fear physical harm and being primaried. These concerns are only relevant if the President remains sufficiently popular among MAGA supporters.
Even though Trump has Republican control of both chambers of Congress, he does not have a 60-vote majority in the Senate to prevent his bills from being filibustered. As such, to pass his massive tax cuts for the wealthy, he must use reconciliation, which only requires a simple majority in the Senate. It is a complex process, but in general, bills using reconciliation must be deficit-neutral and cannot alter many existing laws.
There is a method to Trump’s madness. To maximize his financial gain, he decimates programs like Head Start, USAID, NIH research, veterans’ programs, the Weather Service, Medicaid, and many others. Trump claims virtually daily that the new tariffs he has implemented on all countries around the world (except Russia) thus far are bringing in $2 billion a day. Trump’s con is to use all the savings from cut programs and revenues from the tariff to fund his tax cuts for the rich.
Steve Bannon, Trump’s MAGA leader, has warned that MAGA is dependent on Medicaid, and many of the programs that are being axed would be problematic. Trump must get his tax cut scam bill passed quickly. He must do it before MAGA realizes they are being conned as they lose their hospitals from Medicaid cuts, lose their kids’ Head Start, lose veteran services, and much more.
Republican Congresspersons and Senators will continue to follow Trump down the rabbit hole if his poll numbers do not sufficiently tank. While Trump’s Democratic and Independent poll numbers are cratering, the poll that matters immediately for Republican politicians is their base. Fox News, Newsmax, and the entire well-funded right-wing media ecosystem continue to cover for Trump’s evil deeds.
The mainstream continues to use balanced and false equivalence reporting. They do little to nail the message and educate everyone about the excruciating reality that will follow. The independent media is the only resource left to reach our MAGA friends before it is too late.
