Many Democrats’ Epstein response show that theoretical empathy is no better than no empathy at all.

July 20, 2025 By Egberto Willies

Democrats are partnering with some MAGA with an almost singular focus on the Epstein scandal’s damage to Trump, oblivious to base-activating time wasted — theoretical empathy meets no empathy.

Democrats’ Epstein response and theoretical empathy.

I will not be writing about the substance of the Epstein case, as given today’s reality, I do not believe it has any upside for people experiencing poverty, working, or middle-class. It remains a distraction. I may sound a bit callous because of the 250+ underage girls that were involved. I feel for any underage girl, or any woman, Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump may have taken advantage of to my core. But I know it has virtually no effect on the Trump base voter. They are only upset because they are not getting documents to embarrass or imprison LIBERALS. The fact that this president elected a known degenerate is proof enough that we are willing to ignore the terrible deeds of powerful men for many reasons, prejudice playing a significant role.

I recently did a Substack Live followed by an attached article I wrote titled “Democrats are making a big mistake by joining the Trump Epstein scandal.“ I crosslinked the article to my website, Facebook, and Daily Kos. The article was well-received by many. Many immediately changed their minds as they read the article. But many outright called me out as being stupid and allowing Trump to get away with evil deeds.

Eighty-two million eligible American voters did not cast a ballot in the 2024 election. That is about 34.7% of the electorate. They are mostly working class. 82.5% of people with advanced degrees voted, compared to 52.5% of high school graduates. The non-voter is generally politically unaligned, younger, and less likely to follow traditional news sources; a substantial percentage is also less educated. These are individuals who are unable to afford college, unable to buy a house, unable to pay off their student loans, struggling to pay rent, and working to care for their parents, grandparents, or other family members. Do you think the Epstein scandal has any bearing on their day-to-day life?

People with the privilege of being financially stable, 23% of Americans, have the wherewithal to attempt to extract the kilograms of flesh from our Thug-In-Chief to damage him. But as our airways and mainstream media salivate and hyperventilate about the Epstein Scandal, one where the last victimization occurred 19 years ago, we are reopening wounds that may have been closing. And just as bad, we’re putting 77% of our population at economic and health risk by taking our eyes off the ball, the Big Beautiful Bill that will kill and starve many, and the Rescission Bill that has killed millions abroad and will further erode NPR and PBS, public media that reach millions.

If the Epstein Scandal would diminish Trump’s power and break his cult, something that may attenuate our move to fascism, I would be all in. As an engineer, I examine the data, and as a journalist/blogger, I examine history. While it would bring great satisfaction to expose the president again for what he is, this country has proven time and time again it is willing to turn a blind eye to some to maintain our national myth.

Mamdani proved in New York what can be extrapolated elsewhere: Get rid of the high-paid consultants and meet people where they are. Remember that he activated a piece of that 34% of people who do not vote. While Cuomo maintained a lot of the Latino and Black vote, these are people who vote in their interest, but they are biased in favor of those they believe will win. Remember, Black voters largely supported Hillary Clinton during the early stages of the 2008 Democratic primary, until Barack Obama demonstrated electoral viability and spoke to their needs with more progressive policies.

We should not spend this time on the Epstein Scandal or ads. In fact, to the 77% of Americans who are a paycheck away from a financial crisis, it is unempathetic. We must engage in coalition-building, education, mending fences where possible, and outreach everywhere. We should be careful that the empathy we feel for the two-decades-old victims isn’t simply yearning for personal satisfaction at watching a president squirm.

I cannot say this strongly enough, every day we are speaking about the Epstein Scandal and minimizing the coverage about the horror of the Big Beautiful Bill and the Rescission bill that will starve many, impoverish many more, take away their Medicaid, and some Medicare to give our hard earned tax dollars to billionaires, is a day we fail to build a winning coalition. November’s off-year elections are less than four months away, and the 2026 midterm is less than one year and four months away. We need to channel our empathy into a place to help the 77% of Americans who are struggling.

We must amplify every incident that is occurring because of Trump’s evil bills. We are aware that farmers are facing difficulties harvesting due to a shortage of immigrant labor. We must be present with cameras and media to link the labor shortage to increased prices and shortages. We are aware that there are laid-off electricians in Maine and other areas where construction of solar power plants has halted. Cameras must be positioned in the faces of those electricians as an example of what the bill will continue to do to the working class. We know that over 300 rural hospitals will close due to the bill. Every single one that closes going forward, as did Mid Coast Medical Center in Trinity, Texas, must be tied to our failed medical system that the bill is making worse. Cameras and interviews all over will make it real to Americans. I could go on and on. But you get the picture. Any time spent on the two-decades-old Epstein case is a denied opportunity to educate and build coalitions based on one’s personal economic and health condition.
