Independent Media’s Role in Resisting Billionaire Media Control

Trump-aligned billionaires are seizing control of social media platforms. Trump-aligned billionaires are seizing control of social media platforms. Here’s why it matters.

Independent Media Control

Summary

Larry Ellison, billionaire founder of Oracle and staunch conservative, is poised to take control of TikTok. This move could consolidate immense power over social media and entertainment in the hands of one family already connected to Donald Trump. With Ellison’s son already owning CBS, Nickelodeon, and potentially Warner Bros., this deal would give the family unprecedented influence over what Americans see and hear. Progressive voices warn that this is a direct threat to democracy and free information flow, especially heading into the 2026 election cycle.

  • Larry Ellison is positioned to purchase TikTok, giving his family control over vast entertainment and news networks.
  • Ellison and his son, David, are strong Trump supporters, raising concerns about political bias and manipulation.
  • The family already controls CBS and Nickelodeon and has plans to acquire Warner Bros..
  • This consolidation mirrors other right-leaning billionaires’ control over media, such as Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Progressives urge building independent media networks now to counter future algorithmic election interference.

The potential takeover of TikTok by Larry Ellison represents more than just a corporate transaction—it’s a direct threat to democracy. Concentrating so much control over media and communication platforms in the hands of Trump-aligned billionaires risks distorting public discourse and silencing progressive voices. As elections near, algorithms could be weaponized to favor right-wing narratives, making grassroots, independent media more vital than ever.

The looming acquisition of TikTok by Larry Ellison, founder of Oracle and one of the world’s wealthiest men, should alarm every American who values democracy and free speech. This isn’t merely a business deal; it’s a seismic shift in who controls the flow of information in the United States. Ellison and his family already wield significant power through their ownership of CBS, Nickelodeon, the Smithsonian Channel, and possibly Warner Bros. Discovery. Adding TikTok to this empire would create a media behemoth capable of shaping public opinion on a scale never before seen.

TikTok is not just a platform for dance videos and viral trends—it has become one of the most influential sources of news and grassroots activism, especially among young people. Its algorithm surfaces local stories and underreported issues that mainstream media often ignore. TikTok has been instrumental in amplifying the voices, from Black communities fighting systemic racism to progressives advocating for climate action and workers’ rights. If Ellison, a known Trump supporter, gains control, that organic flow of information could be curtailed, with algorithms subtly manipulated to favor right-wing narratives.

This threat isn’t theoretical. History has shown how corporate-owned media shapes public opinion. Jeff Bezos’s ownership of The Washington Post has already led to editorial decisions favorable to corporate interests. Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta empire—Facebook, Instagram, Threads, WhatsApp—has been accused of bending to conservative political pressure, including from Donald Trump. Now, with Ellison in the mix, nearly every central social media platform could fall under the influence of Trump-aligned billionaires.

The timing couldn’t be worse. As the 2026 election approaches, control over digital information streams becomes a powerful weapon. Algorithms could be adjusted subtly, promoting certain stories while burying others. Imagine progressive activism buried while pro-Trump messaging floods feeds. This isn’t censorship in the traditional sense—it’s algorithmic manipulation, nearly invisible to the average user. The result? A misinformed electorate and a tilted playing field for democracy.

The progressive response must be proactive. Waiting until the takeover happens will be too late. Just as the muckrakers of the early 20th century exposed corruption without digital tools, today’s activists must build independent networks outside billionaire-controlled platforms. That means subscribing to newsletters, supporting independent journalists on Substack and other platforms, and creating direct communication channels immune to corporate interference.

Independent media isn’t just an alternative; it’s a lifeline. Mainstream outlets, beholden to advertisers and corporate owners, have repeatedly failed to cover critical issues—from systemic racism to corporate tax loopholes. The recent silence around two Black men found hanging in Mississippi is a stark reminder of whose stories are deemed newsworthy and whose are erased. The lack of coverage of the extreme pain working-class Americans will feel from insurance and other costs at the behest of the Big Beautiful Bill is underreported to appease the oligarchy. Only independent, grassroots media have the freedom to challenge these narratives.

This fight isn’t just about TikTok. It’s about whether democracy can survive in a digital age dominated by a handful of billionaires. Progressives must mobilize now, building resilient networks of information sharing and activism. The stakes couldn’t be higher: the integrity of future elections, the survival of independent voices, and the very health of our democracy depend on it.

For those who care about truth and equity, the message is clear: subscribe, support, and spread independent media. Do not wait for the takeover to be complete. By then, it will be too late.
