How Republicans will hurt rural people with this IRS pullback and US Postal Service privatization.

Why is the GOP intent on passing policies that will hurt its most devout supporters, rural voters, by privatizing the US Postal Service and forcing the IRS to eliminate free tax preparation software?

GOP to hurt their own

Podcasts (Video — Audio)

Summary:

The video highlights the Republican Party’s ongoing efforts to undermine public goods like free IRS tax filing software and the USPS, favoring corporate profits over citizen welfare. These policies disproportionately harm rural and low-income Americans, forcing taxpayers to pay private companies to file taxes and threatening essential postal services in rural areas. The GOP’s agenda reflects a pattern of betraying its base while prioritizing corporate interests.

  1. IRS Free Filing Software: Republicans aim to dismantle a free tax filing program piloted by the IRS, benefiting corporations like TurboTax at taxpayers’ expense.
  2. Corporate Lobbying Influence: Billionaire-backed corporations pressure GOP lawmakers to prevent government-provided free services.
  3. USPS Privatization Threats: Plans to cut USPS services in rural areas threaten mail delivery while benefiting private companies.
  4. Impact on Rural Voters: Policies harm Republican voters in rural areas by reducing access to affordable services like mail and tax filing.
  5. Democratic Messaging Gap: The failure of Democrats to effectively communicate these betrayals allows harmful GOP policies to persist unchallenged.

These actions by the GOP exemplify their allegiance to corporate interests over the public good, forcing Americans to pay more for basic services like tax filing and mail delivery. Progressive leaders must expose these betrayals, emphasizing that public services should remain accessible and equitable for all, not turned into profit streams for the wealthy elite.

The Republican Party, under the guise of fiscal conservatism and government efficiency, often adopts policies that betray the very constituents who elect them. Two recent examples exemplify the GOP’s push to dismantle the IRS’s free tax preparation initiative and their ongoing campaign to privatize the United States Postal Service (USPS). These actions reflect a troubling pattern of prioritizing corporate profits over public welfare, mainly targeting vulnerable rural and working-class Americans—ironically, the backbone of Republican voter bases.

The IRS Free Tax Filing Program: A Corporate Giveaway

For decades, Americans have paid billions to private companies like TurboTax and H&R Block to file taxes, an essential civic duty. This expense exists not because it’s necessary but because of deliberate lobbying by corporations that profit from it. The IRS, recognizing the undue burden this places on citizens, initiated a pilot program offering free direct filing software. This program aimed to streamline tax filing, reduce costs for taxpayers, and simplify compliance with federal tax laws.

However, at the behest of tax software lobbyists, GOP lawmakers are working to kill this initiative. Their argument—that such a program represents a “conflict of interest” for the IRS—is both disingenuous and laughable. The IRS already determines what taxes are owed; enabling citizens to file directly with the agency is a logical extension of its duties, not a conflict. The real “conflict” lies in elected officials prioritizing corporate interests over their constituents’ financial well-being.

If the GOP succeeds, Americans will continue to pay a de facto “tax” to corporations like TurboTax to fulfill their legal obligation to file taxes. This policy disproportionately harms low-income Americans who can least afford these costs. For many, the $50–$150 spent on tax software could cover groceries, utility bills, or essential medicine.

USPS Privatization: A Direct Attack on Rural America

Simultaneously, the GOP’s efforts to dismantle the USPS under the pretext of “efficiency” reveal another betrayal of their rural base. Rural Americans rely heavily on the USPS for affordable and reliable mail delivery. Yet, Republican lawmakers, with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy at the helm, are proposing cuts to services in these areas. Their goal? To make the USPS “profitable” by reducing service frequency and closing rural post offices.

This move ignores a foundational truth: the USPS is a public service, not a for-profit corporation. Its mission, enshrined in Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the United States Constitution, is to ensure universal access to mail services, connecting even the most remote corners of the nation. Privatization would devastate rural communities, where private carriers like UPS and FedEx refuse to deliver due to a lack of profitability. Ironically, these same private companies depend on the USPS for “last-mile” deliveries in rural areas, benefiting from a system they actively undermine.

Republican voters in these communities are unwittingly endorsing policies that will erode their quality of life. While urban residents may find alternatives, rural voters will face delayed deliveries, reduced services, and increased costs—all while their elected representatives profit politically and financially from their suffering.

Why Do These Policies Persist?

The GOP’s consistent attacks on public goods like the IRS and USPS can be traced back to a larger agenda: dismantling trust in government while enriching corporations. By framing government programs as inefficient or corrupt, they pave the way for privatization, which enriches donors and corporations at the public’s expense.

The complicity of GOP voters stems from a combination of misinformation and cultural tribalism. Right-wing media often obfuscates the consequences of these policies, framing them as necessary reforms. Meanwhile, Democrats have largely failed to mount an effective counter-narrative, allowing Republicans to frame these betrayals as “efficiency measures” rather than the corporate giveaways they truly are.

The Way Forward: A Progressive Alternative

To combat these harmful policies, progressives must reframe the conversation. The IRS free filing program is not a “government overreach” but a public good that saves taxpayers money. Similarly, the USPS is not a failing business but an essential service that keeps rural America connected to the rest of the country.

Moreover, Democrats and progressives must be bolder in pointing out the hypocrisy of GOP policies. Ads, speeches, and grassroots campaigns should make it clear: Republicans are taxing Americans to pay their taxes and dismantling essential services in rural areas. Highlighting these truths can help erode the GOP’s support among its base.

Conclusion

The GOP’s attacks on the IRS free filing program and USPS are emblematic of a broader agenda to privatize public services for corporate gain. These policies disproportionately harm rural and working-class Americans, many of whom vote Republican, illustrating a tragic irony. To counter this, progressives must double down on advocating for public goods, exposing GOP hypocrisy, and educating voters about the real stakes. Only then can America move toward a government that serves its people—not just its corporations.
