White House reporters call out Trump for linking DEI to the DC midair airplane-helicopter crash

January 30, 2025 By Egberto Willies

White House Reporters Call Out Trump for Linking DEI to the DC Midair Crash In a move that epitomizes his characteristic blend of opportunism, misinformation, and race-baiting, former president Donald Trump wasted no time in using a tragic midair collision over Washington, D.C., to further his attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. During a press conference, Trump falsely suggested that DEI policies contributed to the accident, despite having no evidence to support his claims. His remarks were not only devoid of factual basis but also reflected his long-standing strategy of scapegoating marginalized communities and distorting policy discussions for political gain. Trump’s Unfounded Attacks on DEI Trump’s press conference was a masterclass in misinformation, filled with misleading statements and outright fabrications about air traffic control hiring practices. He claimed that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was prioritizing diversity over competence, asserting that people with "severe intellectual disabilities" and "psychiatric problems" were being actively recruited for air traffic control positions. These claims were designed to incite fear and reinforce his narrative that DEI policies undermine American safety and efficiency. However, reputable fact-checking sources such as Snopes and The Washington Post have debunked these assertions. The policy Trump referenced, which allows individuals with disabilities to be considered for federal employment, has existed for decades—including during his own administration. More importantly, this policy applies to a wide range of FAA positions, including administrative roles, IT, and facility management—not air traffic control. By misrepresenting the policy, Trump sought to create the false impression that unqualified individuals were being placed in critical safety-sensitive positions, a claim that is both misleading and incendiary. Furthermore, Trump attempted to tie this policy to the Biden administration, despite the fact that it has been in place since at least 2013 and was in effect during his presidency. If he truly believed it to be a threat to aviation safety, why didn’t he change it during his first term? The hypocrisy is glaring. Reporters Push Back Unlike the largely uncritical media coverage Trump enjoyed during his initial rise to power, this time reporters swiftly pushed back against his baseless claims. They directly challenged his narrative, pointing out the contradictions in his statements and questioning his premature assignment of blame. One reporter noted that Trump had already signed an executive order purportedly "restoring safety standards," yet the crash still occurred. If his policies were so immediately effective, why did this tragedy happen? Another journalist highlighted that Trump’s own administration had not reversed the FAA’s hiring policies, undercutting his central argument. Trump’s flippant responses to these challenges revealed his lack of substantive policy knowledge and his reliance on inflammatory rhetoric. When asked if he was getting ahead of the investigation, he dismissed the question, claiming that "common sense" was enough to draw conclusions. This is a dangerous mindset—serious policy decisions should be driven by facts and investigations, not gut instincts and conspiracy theories. The Real Issue: Deregulation and Cuts to Safety Programs While Trump ranted about DEI, he conveniently ignored his own administration’s record of gutting regulatory oversight and defunding key transportation safety programs. During his first term, Trump rolled back numerous aviation safety regulations under the guise of reducing "burdensome" government oversight. His administration weakened requirements for pilot training, attempted to privatize air traffic control, and cut funding for essential FAA programs. The Biden administration, by contrast, has made significant efforts to strengthen aviation safety. Under Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the FAA has taken steps to improve air traffic control staffing, reduce near-miss incidents, and modernize safety protocols. Unlike Trump, who prefers to govern through executive orders and public spectacle, Biden's approach has been methodical and based on empirical data. Buttigieg swiftly responded to Trump’s reckless remarks, stating: "Despicable. As families grieve, Trump should be leading, not lying. We put safety first, drove down close calls, grew air traffic control staffing, and had zero commercial airline crash fatalities under our watch. Now Trump oversees the military and FAA, and his first act was to fire key personnel who kept our skies safe. Time for real leadership, not scapegoating." This response underscores the real issue at hand: Trump’s preference for governing through fear and misinformation rather than investing in substantive policy improvements. Trump’s Dangerous Strategy Trump’s attempt to use a tragic accident to further his anti-DEI agenda is not just misleading—it’s dangerous. By suggesting that diversity hiring leads to deadly accidents, he is not only spreading misinformation but also fueling division and resentment. His rhetoric aligns with broader right-wing attacks on DEI initiatives, which seek to roll back decades of progress in workplace inclusion and equal opportunity. Moreover, Trump’s obsession with DEI as a scapegoat for every societal ill—from military recruitment to corporate performance—follows a familiar pattern of race-baiting that has defined his political career. His base responds to these dog whistles because they tap into long-standing racial anxieties. But in reality, DEI initiatives are about ensuring that workplaces are open to all qualified individuals, regardless of race, gender, or disability status. Suggesting that diversity equates to incompetence is not just offensive; it is fundamentally untrue. The Broader Fight Against Misinformation Trump’s latest misinformation campaign underscores the urgent need for fact-based journalism and robust pushback against right-wing disinformation. The fact that reporters challenged him directly is a promising sign, but this must be the norm, not the exception. If left unchecked, his fabrications can shape public perception, creating an environment where harmful policies—such as cutting DEI initiatives and deregulating safety measures—gain traction. This is why independent media, progressive voices, and fact-checking organizations must remain vigilant. Trump will continue to spread lies, distort reality, and manipulate tragedies to fit his agenda. The challenge for journalists, activists, and everyday citizens is to counter these narratives with truth, logic, and unwavering commitment to justice. Conclusion Donald Trump’s attempt to link DEI to the Washington, D.C., midair crash was not just unfounded but indicative of his ongoing war on diversity and inclusion. His statements were riddled with misinformation, historical revisionism, and racist dog whistles, all aimed at undermining policies designed to ensure equal opportunity. Fortunately, journalists and progressive leaders like Pete Buttigieg pushed back against his reckless rhetoric, demonstrating the importance of challenging misinformation in real time. As the investigation into the crash unfolds, Americans must resist Trump’s attempts to politicize tragedy and scapegoat marginalized communities. Instead, the focus should remain on data-driven aviation safety measures that protect all passengers—not on divisive and dangerous attacks on DEI.

White House reporters immediately pushed back when Trump attempted to link DEI with the crash of the American Airlines Regional Jet airplane and the military helicopter.
