Robert Reich, Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and former Secretary of Labor to the Clinton administration gets it right once more. The first two paragraphs of his Huffington Post blog post says it all.
Democrats are showing once again they have the backbones of banana slugs. The Affordable Care Act was meant to hold insurers to a higher standards. So it stands to reason that some insurers will have to cancel their lousy sub-standard policies.
But spineless Democrats (including my old boss Bill Clinton) are caving in to the Republican-fueled outrage that the President “misled” Americans into thinking they could keep their old lousy policies — and are now urging the White House to forget the new standards and let people keep what they had before.
The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is a monumental change. It is an attempt however flawed to wrestle the grip that insurance companies have on the financial well being of Americans. Much more needs to be done. Much more should have been done. However, if those that purport to fight for the working middle class continue to cower when Republicans and a corporate media assault the truth, then progress will continue to crawl if not recede.
Democrats should take heed from Reich’s admonition.
But right now the President needs all the political support he can muster to hold insurers’ feet to the fire. Democrats should stand firm for a change.
Americans must hold both Democrats and Republicans responsible. Democrats should be held responsible for cowering even though they are morally on the right side of history. Republicans must be punished for the level of deceit, lies, and misrepresentations that will and have materially hurt millions of Americans. Maybe they should all be voted out. Can we populate our government with principled and humane people?
