Mike Huckabee Attacks
It is unbelievable that Mike Huckabee would join the dog whistling parade. Mike Huckabee was always a good Republican that actually spoke to the indigent, the middle class, and others albeit from a very conservative point of view. He however refrained from the epithets and dog whistles.
He was successful in blowing those credentials entirely in his keynote speech at the RNC Winter Meeting. It was not the words nominally that did him in. It was the tone and the implications of the wording he purposely chose.
“And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America,” Mike Huckabee said. “by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in. And providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it. Let us take that discussion all across America because women are far more than the Democrats play them to be. And women across America need to stand up and say enough of that nonsense.”
Mike Huckabee use of the term Uncle Sugar is a clear racial dog whistle at President Obama. There are many who immediately understood what he meant. His intent was to play that card to tell the extremist in that audience he is with them. His use of the term ‘control their libido’ is being used to objectivize independent strong women who are intent of having ultimate control of their own bodies.
The Washington Post Aaron Blake reports that in another section of the speech he said, “I think it’s time Republicans no longer accept listening to the Democrats talk about a ‘war on women, … The fact is the Republicans don’t have a war on women, they have a war for women, to empower them to be something other than victims of their gender.”
It is evident Mike Huckabee is still of the school of thought that a woman can make up her own mind as long as it is in tune with his paternalistic beliefs. Mike Huckabee must have forgotten all the laws his party has been passing throughout the country to imprison women’s rights to the control of their own bodies.
Maybe he is unaware of the pregnant dead woman in Texas forced to stay on a ventilator against her own wishes to incubate her fetus. Maybe he forgot about the Texas imposition of a trans-vaginal ultrasound law. Maybe he forgot that former Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) admitted that their goal was to ensure more states had these restrictive ultrasound laws.
Mike Huckabee has done his party, women, and America a disservice with such vile words. He should immediately apologize to the president and to all American women.
