Monica Lewinsky Speaks
Monica Lewinsky has picked an rather interesting time to reinsert herself into the political discourse. Her first person speak will be released in Vanity Fair on May 8th, 2014. Vanity Fair has released several teasers in anticipation of the entire piece being released. Specifically Monica Lewinsky said the following.
“It’s time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress.” She also says: “I, myself, deeply regret what happened between me and President Clinton. Let me say it again: I. Myself. Deeply. Regret. What. Happened.”
There are several points that Monica Lewinsky wanted to air. She believes the politics of scapegoating was much more damaging to her than her boss, then President Clinton taking advantage of her. She was offered north of ten million dollars in offers that did not feel right for her. The scandal was a severe hindrance to her being able to get employment.
The excerpts do not seem to indicate that this article is vindictive or anti-Clinton. There is a statement in there that should give Hillary Clinton and her supporters pause.
Lewinsky responds to reports made public in February that Hillary Clinton, during the 1990s, had characterized her as a “narcissistic loony toon” in correspondence with close friend Diane Blair. “My first thought,” Lewinsky writes, “as I was getting up to speed: If that’s the worst thing she said, I should be so lucky. Mrs. Clinton, I read, had supposedly confided to Blair that, in part, she blamed herself for her husband’s affair (by being emotionally neglectful) and seemed to forgive him. Although she regarded Bill as having engaged in ‘gross inappropriate behavior,’ the affair was, nonetheless, ‘consensual (was not a power relationship).’”
The passage would be anathema to Hillary Clinton being a strong feminist to many feminists. After-all, she took the same position of blaming self for an act she had nothing to do with that many feminists scorn.
Monica Lewinsky said she is going public in hopes that expressing how her own humiliation affected her may help others. She insinuated that the suicide of 18 year old Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi was a catalyst for her.
Is this Monica Lewinsky using Hillary Clinton’s potential presidential run for financial gain, for publicity to launch a new venture, for spite, or for all of the above? One will never know.
