Luis Lang says he can see clearly now
When I heard Luis Lang’s story I was very upset as was many Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) supporters. I blogged the story based on several stories in the South Carolina local newspapers and other national rags. I donated to Luis Lang’s GoFundMe page and also asked him for an interview. In the first interview Lang said many in the media did not tell the full story.
I invited Lang to appear on my radio show Politics Done Right. Like a trooper he came on the program, took the incoming flak, and answered everyone’s questions.
The predicament that Luis Lang found himself in is exactly the situation Obamacare was designed to protect against. Lang has diabetes. As a self-proprietor he would have been unable to purchase health insurance at all. Any insurance company at best would exclude any current illnesses and purposely charge an unaffordable premium. Worse, they would never have paid out on any serious illness as they would have found a way to link the new illness to Lang’s pre-existing condition.
Over the last few weeks Lang has been periodically keeping me abreast of his health and plans. He reiterated that he would like to be a ‘poster boy’, his words not mine, for the Affordable Care Act. He said he wants to pay it forward. In that light he is working on establishing a new foundation, The Luis Lang Foundation. His goal is to help people that find themselves in the same predicament that he found himself in.
While explaining his plans for the foundation he hopes to build, it was evident that Lang’s heart was in the right place. Lang’s proclivity for some conservative notions is generally evident in his discourse. Some of the rules he was contemplating using to determine who would be assisted showed that either his newly acquired Liberal pedigree is still lacking or that he has been behind the Red curtain for too long. I am sure as he interacts with many of the Liberals that have been helping him tell his story and assisted him financially, he will get it right.
Most of the help Luis Lang has gotten online came from Liberals. They scolded him as they gave. Very few conservatives had come to his rescue. A few weeks ago he told me that he was renouncing his party. He wanted to do it on national TV in order to have an impact specifically on healthcare. Lang may not have realized that today’s Republican philosophy is steeped in Ayn Rand’s theology. In fact one should remember that Atlas Shrugged was required reading in Paul Ryan’s office.
True to form and character, Luis Lang sent me a semi amusing video. The intent is to show that his eyes are now open as the Fox News influence attenuates .
Luis Lang is a good man. He ultimately wants to pay forward what was giving to him in his time of need. He will likely have a lot of medical bills going forward. Lucky for him once he gets over the current uninsured hump, he will qualify to purchase Obamacare (likely with subsidies) irrespective of his pre-existing condition.
