Dr. Nicholas Carnes was a keynote speaker at the Lone Star College Center of Civic Engagement‘s Economic Inequality and Civic Engagement Conference recently in Houston, Texas. He is Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University.
House of Representatives candidates in 2014 raised on average $650,000 for their campaigns. Senate candidates in 2014 on average raised $3 million. Due to outrageous costs to run for office, most Americans view it as off limits or unachievable. This presentation focuses on the “glass ceiling” emerging in politics along with how big money effects the outcomes of elections, the decisions of politicians, who runs for office, and how it is possible to overcome these barriers and how organizations are already doing so.
