D.L. Hughley: Obama was what we aspire to be Trump is who we are (VIDEO)

November 9, 2016 By Egberto Willies

D.L. Hughley was poetic, but his words were true. It will be difficult seeing someone like Donald Trump in the Oval Office every day knowing that getting there required him to fertilize the fears, prejudices, and evils that live within many Americans.

D.L. Hughley says it poetically perfect

Comedian D.L. Hughley had a sober statement that is a window into who we are as Americans. We backslid a bit. One hope’s it is short lived.

D.L. Hughley appeared on an MSNBC panel with former RNC Chair Michael Steele. Tamron Hall pointed out that Republicans were told to vote their conscience. Hughley response to both Hall and Steele about Trump’s campaign was spot on.

“That campaign was based on hate,” Hughley said. “Let me just say this. America saw exactly who it was last night. Exactly who we are. I think Obama was what we aspire to be. Trump and his supporters are who we are. And I think we have come … People said things. Those polls were so off. That meant that people were not being truthful. They said one thing and did another. And that to me is the crux. We have to accept who we are to evolve. We are not as far as we want to be.”

The question is whether the 52% of Americans who did the right thing will stand up to those who failed. Will we stand up to the sexism, racism, misogyny, xenophobia that Trump relied on to win? I trust that after the pain of the defeat and the pain of the gut punch has attenuated; many will re-engage to ensure that Donald Trump is not allowed to take the country over a cliff.

Remember, Donald Trump won in the electoral college. However, the majority of the country is not with him nor do they share his values. Most Americans chose someone else.
