The White House press conference today is a clear indication from Sean Spicer’s answers that the Trump administration as well as Paul Ryan and the Republicans, are just winging it. They are playing with the lives of every American.
Sean Spice unable to answer Trumpcare questions coherently
White House correspondents grilled Trump’s Press Secretary Sean Spicer, and he found himself speaking in an incoherent circular loop about Trumpcare.
One reporter asked a very specific question that should rebuff every single Republican who complained that the CBO did not take into account the other two phase of the supposedly three-phase approach to repeal and replace Obamacare.
“You keep pointing out that the CBO did not take into consideration phases two or three,” the reporter asked. “How were they supposed to take into account something that doesn’t yet exist?”
Spicer’s answer was pure spin and evasion.
“I think that is a question for the House side,” Spicer responded before continuing with an incoherency not related to the issue. “There are constraints that are put on the CBO in terms of what they can consider. But I think that the point that we want to make is that, and in came up yesterday at the briefing, if members are going to base their vote off a score they need to understand the totality and the comprehensive nature of the entire program.”
The reporter pretty much moved on and pointed out that some Republicans have called the bill a big beautiful dud. He then asked Spicer if there is any way to reshape the law. Spicer responded that he hoped so. The reporter pointed out that Freedom Caucus’ Jim Jordan made it clear that the bill was not what either Republicans or Trump ran on and that some wanted the bill ripped up and restarted from scratch. Spicer claimed that the bill passed two committees with unanimous Republican support.
Another reporter asked a question that should give us all pause because it shows the administration is winging it. There is no science to the numbers.
“You said earlier that the White House does not have projections on how many people will lose coverage,” the reporter asked. “That projection hasn’t been made yet? Or are you saying that the White House is not going to come out with those?”
Spicer responded that that is not something OMB does. The reporter’s comeback was perfect.
“If you are advocating for a plan that says the president wants to cover everyone,” the reporter continued. “How are you going to be able to assess whether you’ve been successful if you are not going to project that yourself and CBO’s projections you are saying are invalid.
Spicer gave a non-answer by spinning about people having a choice, Obamacare failing, and other incoherent utterances. One cannot govern on disproving ideological tenets. But that is exactly what this Republican government is doing.
Donald Trump and Paul Ryan are playing with the lives of every poor and middle-class American. As MSNBC’s Ali Velshi explained, the free market simply does not work for health insurance, period. Chuck Todd recently pointed out that the new plan decimates coverage for all but mostly to the Trump voter.
