Seth Meyer’s piece took both Donald Trump and Paul Ryan to task with a perfectly deconstructed attack on all that is wrong with Trumpcare in a Jon Stewartesque manner.
Seth Meyers did it again
Donald Trump will not be pleased by Seth Meyers latest skit on Trumpcare. He showed a particular evil in those pushing the legislation that is hard to miss.
“Trump dislikes the media because they often report basic facts that challenge his world view,” Meyers said. “For the same reason, his administration now dislikes the Congressional Budget Office which released a damning report on the Republican health care plan on Monday that projected the bill would cause a stunning 24 million Americans to lose coverage. .. That might seem like a disaster. But House Speaker Paul Ryan actually tried to spin it as a positive, prompting skepticism even from straight-laced Fox News anchor Bret Baier.”
Seth Meyers then played clips of Paul Ryan praising the CBO report saying he is encouraged and excited about the report.
“Mr. Speaker,” Baier said in the clip. “If you are encouraged by this CBO Report, what CBO Report are you discouraged by.”
That is a Fox News anchor calling out Paul Ryan. You are not dreaming.
“Paul Ryan,” Seth Meyers interjected sarcastically. “You are encouraged that 24 million people will be thrown off their insurance?”
Meyers then deconstructed the tidbits from the report that Ryan used to foster a false optimism. Ryan said the bill will lower premiums. That is true for young healthy people but will skyrocket for older people.
Seth then contrasted Paul Ryan’s reaction to the CBO Report versus Donald Trump’s.
“So Paul Ryan has chosen a strategy of trying to make the CBO Report sound positive,” Meyers said. “And what about Trump and his surrogates. They’re just saying, we shouldn’t believe the CBO at all.”
Meyers then played clips of Trump’s surrogate Jeffrey Lord comparing the accuracy of the CBO to weathermen. He then played clips of Sean Spicer attempting to discredit the CBO by saying they did not include the other prongs to the health care bill in their calculations. Of course, those other prongs don’t exist. And even if they did they would need Democratic votes they will never get. Henceforth, the current CBO Report is the best they could ask for.
“Of course, as usual, Trump is doing a complete 180 here,” Meyers said. “Because he used to love the Congressional Budget Office when it suited his needs, tweeting about the CBO at least thirteen times to criticize Obama. Sometimes Trump is pro-CBO. Other times he is anti-CBO. But one thing we do know is that we can’t believe his promises on health care. Like when he promised during the campaign that he would not let people suffer as president using one favorite phrase over and over again.”
Seth then played the video clip of Trump saying ‘nobody is going to be dying on the streets’ several times.
“So Trump made huge promises on health care that he clearly had no intention on keeping,” Meyer said. “His bill would cut Medicare and kick millions off insurance.”
Seth Meyers artfully and entertainingly pointed out the disingenuousness of the Trump team, the evil that is within the bill, the callousness of Ryan and Trump as they promote the bill, and the most strident facts about the bill. If we all do that, our truth will get through.
Donald Trump and Paul Ryan are playing with the lives of every poor and middle-class American. As MSNBC’s Ali Velshi explained, the free market simply does not work for health insurance, period. Chuck Todd recently pointed out that the new plan decimates coverage for all but mostly to the Trump voter.
