Cynthia Nixon: ‘Understand what we stand for.’ Need to elect ‘better Democrats’

August 31, 2018 By Egberto Willies

Sorry, there was a YouTube error.

I have been very impressed with Cynthia Nixon. At first, I thought it was a joke that this Sex and the City actor was challenging Governor Andrew Cuomo. As the campaign has gone forward, it is clear she is doing her homework and knows how to stay on message. Democrats could learn something from her not generally seen from many politicians.

“Ms. Nixon, you and Governor Cuomo argued yesterday about or argued that during your debate about who it was the biggest Donald Trump critic,”  Yamiche Alcindor asked. “You also said that that Governor Cuomo should return some of the donations that Donald Trump made to his campaign. My question to you is how effective do you think it is to run an anti-Trump campaign given that Democrats did that in 2016 and lost.”

Cynthia Nixon was ready for the question. Her response to Yamiche on running on an anti-Trump message is one Democrats should heed sooner than later.

“That’s exactly why I’m running,” Cynthia Nixon responded. “Because I feel that Democrats this year if we want to win and if we want our voters to turn out, Democrats have to understand what we stand for. We can’t just be a kinder gentler more diverse version of the Republican Party. We need to elect more Democrats this year. But we also need to elect better Democrats. And we need people to speak about the economic and the racial and the gender inequality that’s swallowing our democracy whole. And actually, do something about it not just pay lip service to it.”

Cynthia is very charismatic in person and that has a tendency to draw in voters. If there is any doubt, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is probative.

Check out the interview I did with Cynthia Nixon at Netroots Nation 2018. She was just as assertive and on point. And she is an unabashed supporter of single-payer Medicare for All.
