Many ask why The Democratic Party can skirt the filibuster for some policies but not that affects millions of POCs.
Is The Democratic Party serious about Voter Rights?
The Democratic Party worked hard to raise the debt ceiling by circumventing the filibuster. Why is this not done for voter rights? They saw the urgency. A default would hurt all of those who own capital and, with that, everyone else. To put it bluntly, it would have reshaped the world. The United States would have been rated what it is becoming, a country with a banana republic mindset.
But what about voting rights? How is protecting capital seen as more valuable than protecting the voting dignity of all Americans? And that is the magic. Many see voting rights as doing something for people of color (POC). But if you do not believe POCs are equal, worthy, and human as the majority population, then it is always OK to have them wait perpetually. The thing is that the draconian voter suppression law also affects the low-income portion of the majority population. So what we get is the intersectionality of race and class.
Let’s be clear, the policies that Democratic Party politicians support are not intrinsically racist. Neither is their narrative. But the urgency of execution of economic and voting policies that help those in the majority tells a different story. It was easy to pass two stimuli bills that were broad-based. It was easy to pass a bipartisan infrastructure bill whose spoils went to the right kind of people. But Democrats won’t swing wide for Build Back Better or voting rights.
I wrote about my Netroots Nation experience with insensitivity and prejudice. And it was the largest conference of Progressive bloggers, writers, activists, broadcasters, and politicians. So the question is, is the Democratic Party just as racist as Trump’s Republican Party? Even Martin Luther King got it. It is imperative that we live up to our narrative. But we are not there yet.
