The mainstream media post mortem displays completely misses the point and the danger of their words.

The Mainstream Media is responsible for Donald Trump even as they try to blame something systemic to progressives and the Democratic Party.

Derelict Mainstream Media

Podcasts (Video — Audio)

Summary:

The video highlights the profound failures of mainstream media in countering disinformation effectively, particularly as it pertains to Donald Trump’s electoral success. It underscores that media ineptitude began years ago, exemplified by its handling of Trump’s birther movement and economic misrepresentations. The piece argues that mainstream journalism’s outdated commitment to “balance” inadvertently gives disinformation a foothold, compromising public understanding and democratic processes.

  • Mainstream media fails to challenge and refute disinformation effectively.
  • Trump’s rise relied heavily on repeated falsehoods and media amplification.
  • Traditional journalism practices, focused on balance, are ineffective against disinformation.
  • Progressive policies resonate broadly but are misrepresented or ignored by media.
  • Media post-mortems often misinterpret electoral outcomes and misguide strategic responses.

The video illuminates that to combat entrenched disinformation and elitist detachment, progressives must champion a renewed focus on grassroots communication and independent media. The mainstream’s refusal to adapt, despite Trump’s repeated falsehoods, has shown that progressives cannot rely on traditional channels but must directly engage communities to break cycles of misinformation and foster informed democracy.

The aftermath of electoral cycles in the United States often reveals the mainstream media’s deep-seated inability to grasp and effectively convey the reality of political landscapes. This ineptitude is not only alarming but also dangerous, as it facilitates the spread of disinformation and further entrenches a cycle that disconnects the public from objective truths. The recent discussions following Donald Trump’s decisive win offer a stark example of how mainstream media narratives, in their failure to properly interrogate misinformation and their adherence to outdated journalistic norms, undermine democratic engagement and bolster disinformation.

Mika Brzezinski from MSNBC’s Morning Joe serves as a rare voice of reason in mainstream political coverage, attempting to cut through the fog of spin. However, even the sharpest voices often find themselves drowned out by a media landscape dominated by pundits and consultants who remain out of touch with middle America. In the wake of Trump’s victory, media narratives that paint the election as a “shellacking” for the Democratic Party ignore both the context and the root causes behind such outcomes. To equate Trump’s win to a landslide akin to past elections misses the reality of narrow margins and deep-seated disinformation campaigns that have, over years, seeded doubt and mistrust in public discourse.

The roots of this disinformation did not begin during the most recent election cycle but trace back decades. Donald Trump’s rise can be linked to his willingness to embrace and amplify falsehoods, a practice that catapulted him into the political arena with the birther movement targeting President Barack Obama. This baseless conspiracy questioned Obama’s citizenship despite clear evidence to the contrary. The media, adhering to outdated principles of “balance” and “neutrality,” legitimized these claims by giving them airtime without rigorous refutation. This failure to challenge lies set the precedent for a media cycle that would continue to falter in its coverage of Trump.

When journalists cover public figures, particularly those prone to disinformation, the responsibility extends beyond simple reporting. The traditional model, wherein a figure makes a statement and journalists merely report without deep scrutiny, is ill-suited for figures like Trump, whose strategy revolves around repeating falsehoods until they are accepted as truth. As a result, these statements, whether about election fraud, economic conditions, or social issues, seep into the public consciousness and shape perceptions.

Take, for instance, Trump’s false assertions about the economy. He touted a booming economy under his administration, while failing to acknowledge that the groundwork for recovery was laid during Obama’s presidency after inheriting an economy in freefall. The media’s failure to contextualize these claims and draw comparisons to the economic recovery under President Biden further perpetuated the myth of Trump’s economic prowess. In reality, the economic fallout under Trump’s administration—marked by pandemic mismanagement, deregulation, and fractured supply chains—led to widespread suffering. Yet, Biden’s administration, through Keynesian economic measures, reversed much of the damage and steered the country toward a rare soft landing in economic recovery.

Despite this, the media focused on rising inflation, often without examining its true causes—corporate profiteering and global supply chain disruptions. The narrative that inflation was driven solely by excessive government spending became a talking point repeated without challenge. Progressive economists and reputable sources like the Wall Street Journal acknowledged that Biden’s economic policies positioned the U.S. favorably compared to Europe, where inflation reached far higher levels and economies faltered. Yet, these nuances seldom made it into mainstream discourse, drowned out by sensationalist headlines and punditry disconnected from working-class realities.

What emerges is an industry driven by consultants and elites who rarely interact with the everyday people they claim to represent. The Democratic Party’s reliance on high-paid consultants who lack grassroots connections exacerbates this problem. Despite having significant funds to influence narratives, these resources are often funneled to organizations far removed from the people who need to be informed and mobilized. Progressive bloggers, grassroots activists, and independent media—those who speak directly to the heart of communities—are overlooked in favor of traditional media buys and consultancy fees.

This disconnect manifests starkly in voter misinformation. When voters in swing states or rural areas articulate beliefs shaped by repeated lies, it reflects not only Trump’s successful disinformation campaigns but also a media ecosystem that failed to challenge them effectively. As Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Eugene Robinson noted, many of these voters hold beliefs divorced from reality because they have been exposed to the same unchallenged misinformation repeatedly.

The mainstream media’s post-mortem analysis often concludes with familiar tropes—the need for Democrats to pivot rightward, to offer tax cuts, or to distance themselves from progressive values. These analyses ignore that policies championed by progressives, such as universal healthcare, paid family leave, and climate action, resonate with majorities across political divides when stripped of partisan labels. The media fails to report that these same voters, when asked about their policy preferences, support these measures overwhelmingly.

In an age where information wars shape elections, progressives must double down on direct engagement, bypassing mainstream channels that have proven ineffective. Activists and independent media must fill the vacuum left by traditional outlets, focusing on education and counter-narratives that debunk disinformation. The challenge is immense, but the stakes are higher: a failure to adapt and inform the public will only embolden those who benefit from chaos and division.
