As I was doing my morning Politics Done Right program live on KPFT 90.1 FM, a regional activist texted me.
I got this message from a friend overnight. Conroe City Council wants to essentially stop protests.
URGENT 🚨 Conroe Alert: Tomorrow (Thurs) 6 PM at City Hall, the City Council will vote on a “Mass Gatherings” ordinance requiring costly permits and $1 million insurance for protests or vigils of 25+ people. This would make free speech a pay-to-speak privilege. Show up, stay informed, and make your voice heard before it’s too late.

I immediately told my live audience. More importantly, I pointed out that regardless of the outcome, everyone’s free speech rights allow them to stand or walk in any public area with a sign if they so desire. In other words, we can only be suppressed with our expressed consent. Throughout the day, I kept getting calls asking me if I had heard of Conroe attempting to stymie the No Kings protest. An activist who was attending the meeting called me, stating that people were scared to protest if the ordinance was passed. He texted me during the meeting and said that at least 250 people had attended the council meeting, and that every speaker was in opposition. The measure was deferred—a massive win for democracy lovers.
Absent communication between activists and the ability to disseminate this story, there would have been an ordinance in Conroe that would have crippled the No Kings protest and all subsequent protests, given the fear it would put in those wanting to exercise their First Amendment rights.
Although we have won that battle, the authoritarians are trying to erect many other barriers slowly and methodically to stop dissent on their march to take complete control. They are doing this directly in front of us, which sometimes makes it more difficult to see.
Most Americans obtain their news or communicate through social media platforms. Here is the new reality. Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads, and Instagram are owned by billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, the same Zuckerberg who, at a recent dinner, asked Trump if he approved of the statement Zuckerberg made in support of him. Elon Musk owns X (Twitter). Now Larry Ellison will own TikTok. These are all Right-Wing Tech Bros Trump supporters who do not believe in Democracy. They exert control over who sees your messages and what news you see. They are all invested in AI and can build the framework for whatever news you see or distribute.
The Conroe alert I mentioned above is probative. It was delivered to me by text and email. Activists around the region were texting via Signal and emailing to encourage people to attend the council meeting. While this approach worked for this small and localized event, we have traditionally relied on the vast reach and influence of social media to engage a larger regional and national audience and advance a cause.
Tyrants around the world would shut down, limit, or exert negative control over social media access as they carried out their tyrannical acts. And we are already seeing that. Many activists and activist journalists are seeing their content, live streams, videos, and messages throttled so that even their subscribers cannot see them. Around election time, it is likely to worsen.
All is not lost. We have identified the problem and what they are trying to accomplish. They expect us to be undisciplined and cower in fear. We must not. The solution is to remember the early days of the muckrakers and execute it on steroids. And the answer is relatively simple. It involves email, text, and face-to-face communication. In the process, it is more personal and reminds us of our shared humanity.
So here is what all of us must do.
- Keep a list of emails of everyone you know. Make sure that you know how to email them at once.
- Keep a list of the phone numbers of everyone you know. For critical events and happenings that require a quick response, be prepared to text them in addition to emailing them.
- Remember to be friendly with everyone, irrespective of what you think their ideology is. Always be ready to civilly discuss any topic, especially one that you discern affects them or their family.
- Subscribe to sources of information you trust that deliver their content to you by email, which you can share when applicable to your own lists (email, phone, face-to-face).
- Encourage those you know to implement this as well.
With discipline, this enables us to build our own media exponentially, reaching the entire nation and thereby escaping the control of billionaire-controlled mainstream media and social media.
