Lies by politicians have consequences on citizens. A free press is the entity whose proper function serves as a backstop to lying politicians. When a free press fails in its duties citizens are hurt. That is the case becoming more evident with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
Gallup released a new study that is amazing. Two states that had the biggest drop in the uninsured rates of its citizens were Red States. Which Red States? Arkansas and Kentucky.
Between 2013 and 2014 the uninsured rate in Arkansas fell by more than 11%. The uninsured rate in Kentucky fell by more than 10%. These two states are two of the poorest states in the country. They both had Democratic governors that accepted the Medicaid Expansion to Obamacare.
The following table is rather revealing. The states with the largest decline in the uninsured are the ones that accepted the Medicaid Expansion to Obamacare.
The state that claims itself as an economic miracle is dead last in securing healthcare insurance for its citizens. Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the country by a long shot. The Texas Hospital Association immediately sent out a press release that included the following after the Gallup report came out.
AUSTIN, Texas—(Feb. 24, 2015) Texas continues to have the highest percentage of residents without health insurance, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. At the end of 2014, 24.4 percent of Texans had no health insurance.
Nationwide, the rate of uninsured continues to decline. Between 2013 and 2014, it fell more than three percentage points to 13.8 percent, the lowest annualized rate across the seven years of Well-Being Index measurement.
Texas, however, continues to lead the nation in its rate of uninsured in large part because the state has rejected new federal funds to develop its own solution to provide greater access to affordable private health insurance for low-wage working Texans. Hospitals and other health care providers, employers, the privately insured and property taxpayers bear the costs of health care services for the uninsured.
The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) was in Washington recently. Virtually every potential candidate spoke out against Obamacare. Ted Cruz called it a train wreck. Maybe he was thinking about the healthcare train wreck in Texas. After-all, by refusing to take back $100 billion dollars in Texas taxpayer dollars from the federal government in the form of the Medicaid Expansion to the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), over one million Texans remain uninsured. This political malpractice will kill thousands of Texans.
The traditional mainstream media simply reported Ted Cruz’s statement. No context was provided. He said this in the same week Gallup reported that in fact Obamacare is not a train wreck but a policy that is actually reducing the uninsured rate.
The Gallup report concluded the following.
While a majority of Americans continue to disapprove of the Affordable Care Act, it has clearly had an impact in reducing the uninsured rate in the U.S., which declined to its lowest point in seven years by the last quarter of 2014. This trend could be poised to continue, as 55% of Americans who remain uninsured plan to get health insurance rather than pay a fine.
States that have implemented two of the law’s core mechanisms — Medicaid expansion and state health exchanges — are seeing a substantially larger drop in the uninsured rate than states that did not take both of these actions. Consequently, the gap in uninsured rates that existed between these two groups in 2013 nearly doubled in 2014.
Sarah Kliff at Vox wrote an excellent piece titled “8 ways Obamacare has proved its critics wrong” that is a must read for Obamacare supporters and detractors alike. She did her homework. The lazy traditional mainstream media can simply pick the detailed corroborated analysis to build their reporting without much effort to force politicians to tell the truth. Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, and other lying politicians should be forced to answer for lying to American citizens.
Republican governors and legislators that are denying their citizens the ability to get affordable healthcare by accepting the Medicaid Expansion to the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) are sentencing many of their constituents to death. Moreover they are squandering their taxpayer dollars as healthcare dollars that their states have paid to the federal government are not returned to provide healthcare to their own citizens. The economic impact is unrecoverable as long as their ideological intransigence remains.
When will we stop rewarding lying politicians? When will rewarded malpractice by the traditional mainstream media and politicians stop? It will when we take control of the message.
