Bill Maher defends Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton
To be clear, of any candidate running, Democrat or Republican, Hillary Clinton based on her achievements and intellect is the most qualified candidate bar none. That she is a woman and that the country should be yearning to cross the barrier of electing a woman as president, something achieved by many countries we claim are hostile to women, Hillary Clinton should be a shoo-in.
Unfortunately while Hillary Clinton is competent and qualified, she may be un-electable irrespective of what the polls say right now. A few months ago I wrote two articles. The first, “Is Hillary Clinton The President We Need At This Time?” explored many of the questions that seem to show her disengaged from what really ails the middle-class. The second, “Hillary Clinton backtracks but her interview in the Atlantic could be fatal to her chances for the presidency” showed a solidified neocon lite bonafide. These were all before any of the new likely self-inflicted faux-allegations.
Hillary Clinton likely knew she would be running for the presidency again. Hillary Clinton also knows that their is a Right Wing machine that will leave no stone unturned to muddy the Clinton name. There is enough known old baggage that is ad ready (e.g, President Bill Clinton signing the bill that repealed Glass-Stegall that was instrumental in the economic collapse, Monica Lewinsky sexual debacle, perceived access to the White House for a fee, and on and on).
Now there are new allegations of conflict of interests as foreign cash flowed into the Clinton Foundation. The Clinton foundation accepted money from governments that mistreat women. Then there is Bill Clinton having the role of honorary chancellor of a for profit college. Many know or they are finding out now how toxic for profit colleges and universities are for the middle-class, poor, and the taxpayer.
Why then would Hillary Clinton add even more to the manufactured paranoia? Why would the Clinton’s not act smarter? The topic was the first topic discussed on Real Time with Bill Maher. Bill Maher asked if there was anything there with the new allegations. “With the Clintons there is always at least a hair there,” Daily Beast and Hillary Clinton supporter Ana Marie Cox said, “I think there is at least half of a there, there. The thing about the Clintons that is so amazing to me is you know you hear it’s better to apologize than to ask for permission. They seem to not want to ask for permission or to apologize. They want to just do what they do and if it looks shady they raise their hands and can’t believe you are accusing them of anything. I mean this looks bad. There is a part of me that feels like it looks so bad it cannot possibly be true, like they are not that stupid. Then again they are pretty stupid.”
Ana Marie Cox is wrong. Stupid is not the appropriate word. Hubris is.
It is doubtful that any of the new allegations will amount to anything other than fodder, embarrassment, and ill-conceived doings. But will they leave enough doubt in the minds of many to throw their hands up. With a country still needing politicians to function, is another Clinton saga driven administration palatable?
Those are serious questions. I do not know the answer. I do know that the Democratic Party better have options as a Clinton implosion is a distinct possibility.
