Wendy Davis Speech To Battleground Texas Activists
Senator Wendy Davis visited Houston last Thursday, October 10th, 2013. She spoke to over 300 Battleground Texas activists. These Battleground Texas activists were excited all evening with the expectation of getting confirmation that Wendy Davis was in it to win it.
It was clear from her speech that she is in this race not as some bridge builder to the next election, but to be the next governor of the great state of Texas. Her speech was a shorter if not a more personalized version of the speech she gave at The National Press Club.
It was very clear that Senator Davis has a theme intended on reaching Texas’ low voting population. Her theme is simply that everyone wants to have their voices heard. In Texas their voices have not been heard. She will be that voice that is listening to those who have not been heard.
As Battleground Texas activists listened attentively, she told the story of her grandfather getting a stroke. He could not speak and used her to transcribe his ‘voice’. She said she understood how important it was for her to meticulously get his true voice as she transcribed.
Davis’ message was simple and straightforward. She will be the voice of those that have not had a voice for decades. Most importantly she will do what is necessary to be the real voice.
Senator Davis understands that winning this election will not be easy. She said she is used to being an underdog or discounted. After all, she won in a district she should not have won in.
Davis gave marching orders to the Battleground Texas activists. She wanted them all to become deputy voter registrars. Many in the auditorium already were. She encouraged all to bring in new voters, voters who had not had their voices heard.
Senator Davis’ speech was very well received. She energized an already energized group of Battleground Texas activists. After the speech, she was gracious and spoke to and took pictures with many of the activists. She was whisked away a bit too soon but she promised she would be back.
If Senator Davis is to win the governorship of Texas, she must spend quite a bit of time in the Houston area, Harris County. Harris County is the center of gravity of Democrats in Texas. It is the center of gravity of progressive bloggers, grassroots activists, and a Democratic Party organization that has already begun mobilizing the Democratic and independent base. In fact, 30 progressive Texas bloggers raised over $10,000 in the 12 hours preceding her speech.
Battleground Texas activists were visibly satisfied with the program. They stayed around the auditorium strategizing and exchanging information.
Wendy Davis was instrumental in reinvigorating the masses in Texas. Most in the traditional media have discounted the chances of a Governor Wendy Davis. No one should.
